This is my latest still life. The light coming in the window kept changing sometimes obscuring the shadow from the artificial lighting and constantly changing the way the light reflected off the kettle.

This is the setup for my fifth value study completed today. I took the photo later in the day after the daylight coming in the window on the right increased in intensity obscuring the shadows under the objects.

Here is a black-and-white value study, "Buoy Knot", completed today, April 17, 2011. This is a large work, 24" x 36". I made the sketch for it in 2006.

Second Value Study: Still Life

I painted this study in class on Wednesday, April 13. It is such an honor and privilege to have this opportunity to study oil painting under Daniel Corey. One week ago, I had no idea how to do a value study in oil. That is not to say I knew nothing of painting. Over the years, I have developed some skill and technique painting watercolors. You can take a look at some of my work at my website. I am looking forward to applying the value study to capture what I find important in what I am looking at.

My First Homework Assignment

Here is a black-and-white value study I painted en plein air at Pemaquid Point, Bristol, Maine, on Friday, April 7, 2011. Several passersby offered very kind and encouraging words. Were it not for the inspirational Daniel Corey oil painting class at the Boothbay Region Art Foundation, I would probably never have tried this. I had spent the previous Thursday scrounging around the barn for an old oil paint box to modify into a tripod-mounted pochade box. I used a very large Manfrotto tripod with three axis clamp head I have had for some time. The whole thing together is quite a heavy contraption but it is very sturdy and not likely to blow over in the wind. After that, I cut out a couple of plywood panels for a palette. I managed to get a decent French polished surface on one of them after staining it with gray paint. While this was drying, I applied gesso to half a dozen MDF panels I had cut out to fit in the pochade box. I was so excited about getting out to paint my first value study assignment, that I became a little impatient with all the preparation but soon got into the swing of it. The preparation continued into the next day but I finally packed everything into the van and headed down to "The Point" to set up and paint!

Oil Painting Class with Daniel Corey

Last Wednesday, April 6, 2011, I attended my first oil painting class with Daniel Corey. This was just about the smartest thing I ever did. I will be posting more about that later on in this blog.
